Project: Warm, Transitional, and Budget-Friendly Kitchen Remodel
This 1970s kitchen had remained almost entirely original: brown wood cabinets, dark flooring, low bulkheads, and a closed-in layout. Our Stony Plain clients dreamed of a lighter, brighter space with better flow for cooking, hosting, and daily life with their growing family. They wanted a modernized kitchen with more storage, an island, and a layout that actually worked, but still needed the renovation to stay affordable.
With thoughtful planning, smart material choices, and some custom carpentry, we transformed this dated kitchen into a warm and functional space without the cost of a full custom build.

The Vision
Our clients loved the idea of darker cabinetry on the bottom (hides dirt) paired with lighter uppers for a bright, open feel. To blend traditional and modern, we selected Shaker-style cabinets, warm gold hardware, and a timeless white subway tile backsplash. Opening the space was also a must, so we removed the dividing wall between the kitchen and dining room to create a more connected main floor.
Key goals:
- Keep the renovation budget-friendly without sacrificing quality or style
- Create more storage and workable counter space
- Add an island with seating
- Remove the soffits and dividing wall to make the room feel larger
- Brighten the space with light cabinetry, warm metals, and updated lighting

Demo & Layout Challenges
We began by removing all original cabinetry and flooring, then took down the wall separating the kitchen and dining space. Electrical and plumbing were safely re-routed, and the kitchen received new drywall finished in Swiss Coffee by Behr, one of our favourite soft whites for warm, cozy interiors.
A major functional improvement came from rethinking appliance placement: the stove was moved away from a corner and closer to the pantry, and the fridge now sits more centrally with custom built-in styling.
Cabinetry & Island
To stay on budget without looking budget, we installed pre-assembled cabinetry. These offer the look of custom Shaker cabinets at a fraction of the price and are quick to install; ideal for efficient renovations.
A two-tone approach gives this kitchen its signature look:
- White uppers for brightness and height
- Warm wood-tone lowers for durability and contrast
To build the island, we joined two base cabinets and wrapped the back with matching cover panels. The island adds storage, a prep surface, and seating, instantly becoming the center of this newly opened-up space.
Counters, Storage & Custom Details
The perimeter features a light Formica laminate countertop: durable, affordable, and easy to maintain. On the island, a butcher block top brings warmth and a natural texture that balances the modern finishes.
To make the fridge look intentionally built-in, we created a custom MDF surround and overhead box for baskets and extra storage. Painted to match the cabinetry, this simple custom element gives a high-end, custom millwork feel without the custom millwork price.
Tile & Trim Work
A classic white subway tile backsplash keeps the design timeless and bright. Warm grey grout adds subtle contrast without overwhelming the space.
The upper cabinets were installed 6″ below the ceiling, so we created a painted MDF backer and added crown moulding to give height, polish, and a custom finish. Small details like this make an affordable kitchen feel bespoke.
Lighting, Hardware & Fixtures
Lighting plays a major role in how a kitchen feels. We added warm gold pendant lights over the island, and a semi-flush mount over the sink for task lighting and visual balance. The brushed gold ties into the cabinet hardware, creating warmth throughout the space.
A new stainless steel sink and faucet were installed, but the homeowners kept their existing white appliances: an easy way to stay on budget without compromising the fresh new look.
The Finished Space
The result is a bright, functional, beautiful kitchen with space to gather, cook, and connect. Removing the wall completely changed how the home feels, and the island provides practical storage plus a spot for morning coffee or conversation.
The two-tone cabinetry, butcher block island, soft white walls, and warm metals create a look that feels modern but welcoming. Not trendy, just timeless.
Even with budget-friendly cabinetry and laminate countertops, all the little custom details make this kitchen look high-end.
What we love most:
- The island is now a hard-working focal point
- Storage increased significantly
- The space feels open, bright, and inviting
- The finishes will stay classic for years to come
A dated 70s kitchen became a fresh, cozy heart of the home; proof that good design doesn’t have to be out of reach.
