Project: Lake House Living Room Renovation in Spring Lake
There’s something special about transforming a small, dated cabin into a space that feels warm, functional, and welcoming for real life at the lake. This Spring Lake renovation was one of those projects that completely changed how the home felt and functioned.
What started as an awkward and uninspiring living room became a cozy gathering space with custom character details, layered storage, and a built-in office nook designed for modern cabin living. By combining budget-friendly upgrades with thoughtful design choices, we created a room that feels bright, timeless, and deeply connected to the relaxed pace of lakeside life.

The Vision
When the cabin was first purchased, the living room lacked both warmth and purpose. The layout felt disconnected, there was no strong focal point, and the room didn’t reflect the cozy modern lake house aesthetic we envisioned for the property.

Our goal was to create:
- a welcoming central gathering space
- a custom fireplace feature wall
- a functional work-from-home nook
- better storage and organization
- a brighter, more open feeling throughout the room
We wanted the finished space to feel relaxed and casual while still looking elevated and intentional. It should be the kind of room where you can curl up after a day at the lake, host family movie nights, or quietly work with a coffee in hand on a rainy morning.

Custom Shiplap Fireplace Feature Wall
The biggest transformation in this renovation was the addition of a custom shiplap fireplace wall.
Adding vertical architectural detail immediately gave the room more character and helped anchor the entire living space. Shiplap fireplaces have become a timeless way to introduce texture and warmth into modern cottage and farmhouse-inspired interiors.
We designed the fireplace wall to become the focal point of the room while still feeling simple and approachable. The clean white shiplap brightened the entire cabin and reflected more natural light throughout the space.
The fireplace itself added both visual warmth and practical comfort for cooler evenings at the lake, helping transform the living room into a true four-season retreat.

Built-In Office Nook
One of the most practical additions to this renovation was the built-in office nook.
Vacation properties today often need to work harder than they used to. Many families now blend relaxation with remote work, school, or creative projects while away from home. We wanted to carve out a small but functional workspace without sacrificing the cozy feel of the room.
The office nook was integrated directly into the living room design so it feels cohesive rather than like an afterthought. A floating desk flanked with cabinets, and simple accents like a wall sconce and mirror helped the workspace blend naturally into the cabin aesthetic.
This little corner has become one of the most-used areas of the home. In fact, the office nook is still highlighted as a key feature of the Little Lake House for guests today.
Designing for Small-Space Living
Cabin renovations often come with unique challenges. Smaller footprints mean every design decision matters!
Throughout this Spring Lake renovation, we focused heavily on:
- multifunctional furniture
- layered lighting
- visual openness
- practical storage
- durable finishes
- cozy textures
Lake house interiors work best when they balance comfort and functionality. Natural textures, relaxed furnishings, and warm layered materials create that inviting retreat feeling.
By keeping the palette light, we were able to make the room feel significantly larger and more inviting than before.

The Finished Space
Today, this living room feels completely transformed from the dated cabin space we started with. It now functions as the heart of the home: a place for family movie nights, morning coffee, reading by the fire, remote work sessions, and gathering after long days at the lake.
The combination of the custom fireplace wall, cozy furnishings, layered textures, and functional office nook helped turn this small cabin into a warm and welcoming retreat that truly reflects the lifestyle we wanted to create at the lake.
