Project: A Spa-Like Primary Bathroom Makeover in Parkland County

The Vision
This primary bathroom had great square footage but wasn’t making the most of it. The layout felt dated and disconnected with a tiny corner shower, an oversized built-in tub the homeowners didn’t use, and a vanity that no longer suited their style.
Our clients came to Hearthwood with a clear goal: they wanted a calm, spa-like retreat that felt fresh, functional, and elevated. One of their biggest priorities was removing the bathtub entirely. They wanted to create a luxurious shower experience that better fit their lifestyle.
With that direction for this primary bathroom remodel in mind, we reimagined the space from the ground up!
The Design Plan
The biggest transformation came from one strategic decision: eliminating the unused bathtub and combining the original tub and shower footprint into one oversized custom shower.
This allowed us to create an approximately 8-by-10-foot walk-in shower that immediately gave the room a high-end, spa-inspired feel. From there, we layered in warm, modern finishes and strong contrast to create visual interest while keeping the palette calm and cohesive.
Our design direction focused on:
- A spacious, open shower experience
- Soft marble-look surfaces for a timeless feel
- Black plumbing accents for modern contrast
- A beautiful double vanity in a spa-like green colour
- Durable, warm wood-look flooring to ground the space
The Oversized Walk-In Shower
The new custom shower is truly the star of this renovation.
By combining the old tub and shower areas, we were able to build a generous walk-in shower that feels airy and luxurious. We clad the walls in faux marble tile to achieve that classic spa look while maintaining durability and practicality for everyday use.
Black plumbing fixtures add crisp contrast against the soft marble tones, bringing in a modern edge without overwhelming the space. A sleek glass shower door keeps sightlines open and allows the beautiful tile work to remain fully visible from the rest of the bathroom.
The result is a shower that feels custom, elevated, and perfectly suited to how the homeowners actually live.
A Custom-Look Double Vanity Using IKEA
For the vanity, we wanted something that felt fresh and modern while still being budget-conscious and highly functional.
We used beautiful green IKEA cabinets as the foundation for the new double sink vanity. (Here’s why we often use IKEA cabinets!) The rich green tone adds warmth and personality while still feeling calm and sophisticated in the overall palette.
To elevate the look, we paired the cabinet with a faux marble countertop, black plumbing fixtures, and a black-framed mirror. These layered contrasts help the vanity feel custom rather than off-the-shelf.
The finished result is a hardworking double vanity that delivers both storage and style.
Flooring That Warms the Whole Space
To balance the cooler marble tones and black accents, we installed wood-look luxury vinyl plank flooring throughout the bathroom.
This choice brings warmth underfoot while offering the durability and moisture resistance that a primary bathroom demands. The natural wood look also helps the space feel more connected and grounded, reinforcing the spa-inspired aesthetic the clients were hoping for.
The Finished Result
This primary bathroom remodel now feels like a completely different home experience.
By removing the unused tub, expanding the shower, and layering in thoughtful, cohesive finishes, we transformed a dated and underperforming space into a calm, spa-like retreat the homeowners can enjoy every day.
