Project: Modern Coastal Bathroom Renovation
This lakeside bathroom in this Spring Lake cabin was in desperate need of repair. Hidden water and rodent damage had compromised the walls and structure, leaving the space unusable. Working within a modest budget, we completely rebuilt the room from the studs up, transforming it into a bright, modern coastal retreat. Layered marble tile, crisp white shiplap, and a deep navy vanity bring timeless character to this small but serene space, perfectly suited to its lakefront setting.

This compact lakefront bathroom was suffering from extensive water and rodent damage when it was purchased as a vacation property. As the home’s only bathroom, the space needed to be both durable and inviting; a retreat that balanced function and a relaxed coastal charm.
With a modest budget and a mix of new materials and leftover inventory, our team at Hearthwood transformed the damaged space into a light, spa-inspired bathroom with modern coastal character.

The Challenge
When demolition began, Sean uncovered significant hidden damage behind the tub wall including rot, moisture infiltration, and rodent destruction. The framing required complete replacement, and the entire home was professionally spray foam insulated before the rebuild could begin.
Once the structure was sound, we focused on maximizing space and creating an airy, timeless design that felt at home by the lake.
Design Concept
Christina’s design direction drew inspiration from the calm, layered textures of coastal interiors. The palette combined crisp whites, soft marble, and deep ocean blue, paired with natural materials for warmth.
Key design goals:
- Create a fresh, coastal aesthetic with traditional undertones
- Reuse existing marble tile inventory to stay within budget
- Add warmth through texture, shiplap, and rattan accents
- Keep the bathtub to ensure family-friendly functionality
Materials & Finishes
- Vanity: IKEA Hemnes, custom-painted Observatory by Behr
- Countertop & Fixtures: The Home Depot Canada – gold knobs, faucet, toilet, shower trim, and clear glass shower door
- Wall Treatment: Metrie shiplap (walls and ceiling) with matching crown moulding, casing, and interior door
- Tile: Repurposed marble and faux-marble tiles (similar styles available at The Home Depot)
- Mirror & Bench: IKEA
- Paint: Ultra Pure White (walls and trim), Observatory (vanity) – Behr Paint
- Accents: Black towel hooks and white textiles from Amazon
The Result
The finished bathroom feels serene and elevated. It’s a mix of coastal simplicity and refined detailing. The white shiplap walls and marble tile bring texture and light, while the painted navy vanity and gold hardware add a bold, modern touch.
A rattan mirror introduces natural warmth, and a small bench offers both seating and storage. Despite its compact footprint, the bathroom feels bright, open, and cohesive; a true reflection of the Little Lake House’s modern coastal aesthetic.
