The Vision: Moody, Modern, and Minimal
The Edmonton, Alberta homeowners wanted to update this previously dated white kitchen with a sleeker, more contemporary look that still felt cozy and grounded. The design inspiration pulled from Scandinavian minimalism, industrial materials, and a moody, high-contrast palette.

The Challenges: Dated Finishes & Disconnected Zones
The original kitchen lacked interest. The plain white cabinetry, laminate countertops, and older appliances didn’t reflect the homeowners’ style or meet their needs. The layout worked, but the materials and storage needed a serious upgrade.
The Hearthwood Approach: Smart Layout, Elevated Materials
Rather than reworking the entire floor plan, we focused on improving what was already there. We upgraded finishes, appliances, and cabinetry to create a streamlined, functional kitchen that made a statement.
Here’s what we did:
- Installed new stainless steel appliances for a sleek, modern foundation
- Chose modern IKEA cabinetry in black tones to modernize the space and maintain budget
- Used contrasting brass hardware for definition and depth
- Installed pot rails to add interest + a practical storage solution over the stove
- Created a waterfall butcherblock countertop for the island for a high-end feel
- Installed modern subway tile and textured wood paneling for interest
- Created custom industrial-style light fixtures to tie the whole look together
Sean handled all cabinetry installation and custom made the island countertop to integrate beautifully with the new layout, maximizing both function and visual balance.
