15 Things I’ve Learned in 15 Years of Interior Design

After more than 15 years in the interior design world, I’ve learned that good design is about so much more than picking pretty things. It’s about solving problems, understanding people, and creating spaces that support real life. Whether you’re refreshing a single room or planning a full home renovation, these are the lessons that have shaped how I design homes that feel as good as they look.

1. Function comes first.

A beautiful room means nothing if it doesn’t work for your lifestyle. Always start with how the space needs to function, then layer in beauty.

2. Every home should tell a story.

Your home should reflect your personality, history, and dreams—not just trends. The best designs feel personal.

3. You don’t need a huge budget to create something beautiful.

Thoughtful planning, smart sourcing, and creativity can turn even the tightest budget into a stunning space.

4. Lighting can make or break a room.

Always layer your lighting: ambient, task, and accent. It adds dimension and makes a room feel finished.

5. Paint is powerful.

It’s one of the most affordable ways to completely transform a room. Don’t be afraid of bold or dark colors if the space can handle it.

6. Mixing old and new adds soul.

Blending vintage or thrifted finds with modern pieces creates depth and tells a more interesting story.

7. Scale matters more than you think.

The right-sized furniture, lighting, and art can dramatically change how a room feels.

8. White walls aren’t always the answer.

Sometimes a rich, moody color or soft neutral makes a room feel more inviting than stark white. (Though I do love a beautiful off-white wall!)

9. Trends come and go. Style endures.

Invest in classic, timeless pieces for your big-ticket items. Play with trends through decor and accessories.

10. Storage is never overrated.

Beautiful storage solutions can make your home more livable and reduce visual clutter.

11. Layering creates coziness.

Textiles, rugs, lighting, and accessories all work together to create a cozy, lived-in feel.

12. Mood boards and plans save time and money.

Whether you’re a pro or DIYer, having a clear plan prevents costly mistakes.

13. Don’t rush the process.

The best spaces evolve. Take your time to find the right pieces instead of settling just to get it done.

14. Design is emotional.

The way a room feels is just as important as how it looks. Good design makes people feel comfortable, inspired, and at home.

15. There’s no one right way to design a home.

Your home should reflect you. If you love it, it works.
